Advantages of Steel
High-Strength
The mix of elements within steel's construct provides it with enhanced strength. When strength tested, steel routinely outperforms aluminum, titanium, iron, and other metals. Steel remains the metal of choice when high strength is necessary.
Corrosion Resistance
When it comes to corrosion resistance, stainless steel is the first grade that comes to mind. Due to its performance and cost advantages over other corrosion-resistant metals, stainless steel is the zenith and gold standard for corrosion-resistant metals. Standard steels also provide decent corrosion resistance, but nothing compared to stainless.
Melting Point
The melting points of steel and stainless steel are relatively high compared to other metals. Steel's high melting point allows it to be used for various applications and environments that experience consistently high temperatures. Steel's approximate melting point is 2500 F (1371 C), while stainless steel has an approximate melting point of 2750 F (1510 C), respectively.

Types of Steel
Stainless Steel
This kind of steel will always have some level of chromium in it, and oftentimes nickel will be along for the ride too. Stainless steel is relied on for its corrosion and temperature resistance and its strength, whether that's for large dairy milk tanks or food processing equipment.
Carbon Steel
Carbon steel is one of the simplest steel alloys and usually gets broken out into three categories: high, medium, and low—ranging from 0.05% to 2% of carbon content. Depending how much carbon you have within it will influence how ductile, brittle, weldable, and strong it is, and it's commonly called on for car and truck components and structures, as well as springs (pictured below).
Alloy Steel
This points to steel compositions that have alloys aside from just carbon, like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, manganese, and silicon, to name a few. Alloy steel can have anywhere from 1–50% alloying elements, and there are two grades that determine each — low-alloy steel (under 8% of other elements) and high-alloy steel (above 8% other metals). The picture below shows different-sized alloy pipes.
Tool Steel
This strong steel is used for tools, bits, and dies, and contains 0.7–1.5% carbon, and low amounts of manganese. To up its strength, it's heat treated. It often comes as steel rods, shown in the picture below.
Weathering Steel
Products that are designed to stay outside, or spend a lot of time outdoors and subject to various weather conditions (not only rain and snow, but sun rays, too), are often made from this weathering steel. Its chromium, nickel, and copper help this weather-resistant metal form an oxidized layer to keep corrosion away.
Electrical Steel
With around 2–3.5% silicon in its composition, electrical steel is used by electricians and contractors for wiring, motors, transformers, and other electrical needs.
High-Speed Steel
While this is a type of tool steel, it's particularly made for fast-moving power tools that can handle high pressure and speeds, and hot temperatures. To make it strong and durable, tungsten and molybdenum are included, and it is heat treated, too.

Machinery: For vehicles and means of transportation: cars, trucks, trains, airplanes, etc.; for agricultural machines; and for different kinds of technology and engineering work
Tools: For screws, nuts, welding, plates, springs, valves, wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, rivets.
Kitchen utensils: Pots, pans, cutlery, cooking and food cutting surfaces, etc.
Construction components: Composite columns, box girders or square beams, lattice girders, slabs, hollow core beams or bracing, and much more
Decorative parts and elements: Especially in interior design, prominent in bathrooms and kitchens. For example, for countertops, faucets, drink shakers and towel racks.
Steel Production Methods
Basic Oxygen Steelmaking, also known as the Linz-Donawitz process, is a widely used method for producing steel. In this process, molten iron from a blast furnace is transferred to a converter, where a high-purity oxygen stream is blown into the molten metal. The oxygen reacts with impurities, such as carbon, silicon, and manganese, oxidizing them and allowing them to be removed as gasses or slag. This results in the production of high-quality steel with low impurity content and precise control over its composition.
Electric Arc Furnace is another prominent method for steel production, particularly for recycling scrap steel. This process involves melting down recycled steel in an electric arc furnace, which utilizes the heat generated by an electric arc between electrodes and the metal charge. The high temperature of the arc causes the scrap steel to melt, and various chemical reactions occur to remove impurities. The EAF method offers flexibility in steel production, as it can accommodate different types of steel scrap and allows for the addition of alloys to achieve specific steel grades.
This method involves heating a mixture of pig iron, scrap steel, and fluxes in a large hearth furnace. This method does not expose the steel to excessive nitrogen, which makes it brittle, is easier to control and allows for the melting and refining of larger amounts of scrap iron and steel.
